Apparantly, a poorly lit latrine at Camp Victory in Iraq became a rape hazard. Specfically, it was a place where male U.S. soldiers were likely to rape female U.S. soldiers. The women of Camp Victory responded by not drinking water in the late afternoon, so they wouldn't have to pee at night, even though daytime temperatures could reach a 120 degrees. As a result, several women died of dehydration in their sleep. But here's the kicker: Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez ordered the cause of death covered up.
All this is accodring to Col. Janis Karpinski, formerly Brigadier General Janis Karpinski, the scapegoat for the Abu Ghraib scandal. Here is the report of her testimony. (Via braodsheet.)
Added: They are debating the credibility of this report over at Majikthise including whether the story itself is believable and whether Karpinski is a reliable source.
