Organic Rainbow Rings
A few weeks ago I encountered "organic rainbow rings" You can call them "Organic Rainbow Rings" but I know Froot Loops when I see them. Mindful Momma has a comment about these, too. According to her google-fu, they actually are a little bit better than Froot Loops. But, she adds "do we really need organic fruit loops?"

We certainly do not need organic Froot Loops, because the regular Kellogg's kind are already completely awesome!
Fruit Loops are nothing without the petro-chemical food coloring and genetically-modifed cereal crops!
Really, what's the point?
I like the low-sugar Froot Loops. Omg. Marcel does too. Everybody needs Froot Loops.
More seriously, this post reminded me of Steven Shapin's piece in the New Yorker last summer:
[wish I could use blockquote tag here:]
To insist that we are consuming not just salad but a vision of society isn’t wrong, but it’s biting off more than most people are able and willing to chew. Cascadian Farm’s Gene Kahn, countering the criticism that by growing big he had sold out, volunteered his opinion on the place that food has in the average person’s life: “This is just lunch for most people. Just lunch. We can call it sacred, we can talk about communion, but it’s just lunch.

To my mind, issues like Organic Rainbow Rings and the size of companies like Cascadian Farms is largely a matter of distinguishing fake values associated with food from real values. There are real ethical issues associated with food. Some farming techniques really are unsustainable. Animals really do suffer to make your burger. But a lot of people in the organic food movement get all caught up in the superficialities of it. Does the product seem different than its mainstream counterpart. Do I feel more alternative buying it. That stuff is bullshit.
FOr kids who have reactions to the artificial colors in fruit loops organic fruit loops is a great thing. A lot of cereals you just have to find the right brand to find one without artificial coloring...with fruit loops organic is the only way.
