I could imagine this as sort of an Alan Moore-ish villainous idealist -- someone whose acute sensitivity and compassion lead him to believe that the universe is just so unalterably screwed up and full of suffering that universal non-existence would be better. Although probably such a character wouldn't laugh when unveiling his schemes.
